Exchanging to and Alberta license

You can exchange your license for an Alberta license if you have a license from:

  • Any Canadian province
  • The United States
  • Austria
  • Germany
  • Republic of Korea
  • Switzerland
  • Belgium
  • France
  • United Kingdom, excluding Northern and Southern Ireland

Note:  If you are suspended in any other jurisdiction, you CANNOT obtain an Alberta license until the suspension is cleared up in the other province.

 

If you are from any other country, except the above-mentioned, you will need to go through the entire testing process.

In ALL cases, you will need to provide:

  • Proof of legal presence in Canada
    • Canadian birth certificate / passport or
    • Passport with record of landing or
    • Passport with employment / student authorization (valid for at least 3 months)
  • Proof of Alberta residency
    • Bills, paystubs, mailed bank statements, and letters from the government, with your name and an Alberta address visible on them

 

You MUST surrender your other license. The cost is approximately $96.00.

 

Driver’s Abstracts

To obtain your Alberta driver’s abstract, you must fax us a letter authorizing someone to pick up your abstract on your behalf. (Please ensure that you include your Alberta driver’s license number in the letter.) The person picking up your abstract MUST show their driver’s license and pay the fee of $26.55 to get the record. You have an option of choosing whether you want the record for the last 3 years, 5 years or 10 years – please ensure that you indicate this in your letter. Furthermore, if you have any special instructions, please include this in your letter.

Motor Vehicles does NOT require your driver’s abstract when obtaining an Alberta license. HOWEVER, your insurance company may require this, so please check with them before moving here, so as to save yourself time and money. We are able to obtain driver’s abstracts on your behalf from:

Driver’s abstracts from all other provinces must be obtained directly from the province in question.

 

Registering an out of province vehicle in Alberta

  1. Bring in the serial number of the vehicle and purchase an out of province inspection request form for $10.50
  2. Take the vehicle to a mechanic licensed to perform out of province inspections
  3. Obtain Alberta liability insurance for the vehicle
  4. Bring in the following:
  • Proof of ownership
  • Alberta liability insurance
  • Driver’s license
  • Out of province inspection form (green form with barcode in top right hand corner) dated less than 14 days ago
  • Cost of normal registration plus $10.50 activation fee for out of province

Note:  If the vehicle is from outside of Canada, import forms must also be provided.

 

VITAL STATISTICS

If you wish to apply for an ALBERTA birth certificate, marriage certificate, or death certificate, you can apply through us by mail.

If the event occurred in another province, you must contact that province in order to obtain the certificate. Forms are available through us, for a cost of $2.10.
